About aadhaarpay.com

Financial inclusion: the story behind it, what works, and what doesn't.

Please note: aadhaarpay.com is an independent informational blog. It is not an official Aadhaar or Aadhaar Pay website, and is not affiliated with UIDAI, NPCI, or any government body or bank. We don't process payments, offer Aadhaar services, or collect Aadhaar numbers. Never share your Aadhaar number, OTP, PIN or biometrics with anyone claiming to represent this site.

aadhaarpay.com started as a notebook, not a business plan.

Every time a headline, a scheme brochure, or a well-meaning relative explained how digital payments "just work" now, we went and checked how they actually work: what happens at the shop counter, what the process looks like for a first-time user, and what happens when something fails. Sometimes the official story matched the ground reality. Often there was a gap, and few people were talking about it.

India's Aadhaar-linked payments were our starting point. But the more we read, the clearer it became that this is a global story. Countries with very different histories have set out to bring people into the formal financial system, and they have taken very different routes.

So our research now has a wider objective: understanding financial inclusion itself. Why did some initiatives take off while others stalled? What was the story behind each? And what can any country, or any reader, learn from the comparison?

This blog is that research, written down.

What we explore

  • The story behind each initiative: Why it was started, who designed it, what problem it was meant to solve, and how it evolved.
  • What works and what doesn't: Adoption versus real usage, access versus trust, and the gaps between launch-day numbers and everyday reality.
  • Country comparisons: India's Aadhaar Pay, the JAM Trinity and UPI; Brazil's Pix; Bangladesh's mobile financial services and agent banking; Kenya's M-Pesa; and other experiments across Asia, Africa and Latin America, including those that struggled to gain traction.
  • The view from the ground: Small merchants, first-time users, rural households and the agents who serve them. How do they actually experience these systems, and what goes wrong?
  • The journey from cash to digital access: The milestones that moved millions into the formal financial system, and the people still left out.
  • Safety and trust: Fraud, scams, privacy and consent in digital finance, and how to spot red flags.

We don't tell you what to use or buy. We show you how these systems work and how we looked at them, so you can form your own view.

Our approach

  • Benefits, limitations and criticisms, side by side
  • Links to official and primary sources wherever possible, so you can check for yourself
  • Plain language, with no jargon for its own sake
  • No urgency, no "act now", no promotion of any app or provider

We are NOT

  • An official or government website
  • A bank, payment app, or payment service
  • A place to apply for, update or verify anything related to Aadhaar
  • A financial, legal or investment adviser
  • A news content provider
  • A "get rich quick" tips provider
  • Here to make money off you (aside from some ad/affiliate earnings from links you click, which help cover the cost of running the site)

Then who are we?

Ordinary readers and researchers, curious about how money and public digital infrastructure are changing everyday life, sharing the process, not the conclusions.

Why are we doing this?

Because financial inclusion affects billions of people, yet explanations tend to be either too official or too confusing. Comparing experiences across countries shows patterns that no single country's story can. More people contributing means more eyes checking the facts, more real-world experience, and better-checked information for everyone, including us.

How can you contribute?

Spotted an error, or have a first-hand experience with digital payments or benefit transfers in India or elsewhere? Write to us at domain[DOT]coordinator[AT]gmail[DOT]com and we'll look at including you in the group, after some due diligence on our end.

Do you have to pay anything?

No. Everything here is free to read. We're not here to sell you anything.
